How to keep to your New Year's resolutions
It's that time of year again, when many of us make New Year’s resolutions in the hope we’ll spark positive change for the year ahead. But let’s face it, sticking to them can be really hard! In fact, it’s thought just 10% of us actually achieve what we set out to do by the end of the year, and 25% of us give up as early as the 15th January.
So, to help you on your way, we’ve picked out some of the most popular New Year’s resolutions to show you how the South West Coast Path can help you achieve them.
There is stacks of evidence to show walking is a great way to lose weight and for every hour you walk, you could burn up to 250 calories. But if you’re really serious about shifting those unwanted pounds, walking the South West Coast Path could be your secret weapon. Walking for an hour on more challenging terrain like the Path, means you could burn anywhere between 300-600 calories and if you’re carrying a rucksack it will be even more!
Taking regular exercise can help with weight loss, but there are lots of other benefits too. To mention but a few, it can help to: reduce stress, reduce the risk of chronic disease, increase energy levels, promote healthy sleep patterns and increase blood flow to the brain that can help protect mental function and improve your memory. It’s very tempting to feel as though you have to hop on a plane to satisfy your need to travel, but the South West Coast Path has so much to offer & it’s right on your doorstep. Not only is it the longest National Trail in England, it’s part of the International Appalachian Trail and walking it is the equivalent of scaling Mount Everest four times! It passes through two World Heritage Sites, a UNESCO Biosphere, a UNESCO Geopark and over 70% of it is in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. So, if you’re looking for some wanderlust, look no further!
This is a favourite among many of us, but without a good book recommendation you’ll be dead in your tracks. Why not take inspiration from the Path and choose from some of the titles inspired by the very Path you walk on? Brilliant writers like Rosamunde Pilcher, Rudyard Kipling, Agatha Christie, Charles Dickens and Daphne Du Maurier have all penned novels after visiting this unique landscape. And more recently, one of our members, Raynor Winn wrote ‘The Salt Path’ which has just been nominated for a Costa book award.
Learn a new skill or hobby
When we talk about the South West Coast Path, most of us immediately think about walking but there is so much more you can do. With miles of picturesque scenery, it’s the perfect place to try your hand at drawing, painting or photography. You could also try a new sport like kayaking, coasteering or surfing or take up trail running and enter one of the many running events that take place on the Path to keep you on track. If walking is more your thing, you could always try something new like Nordic walking. We’ll be covering this in the next issue of Trailblazing magazine so keep an eye out.
Spend less money
In the wake of Christmas, it’s no wonder ‘spending less’ is one of the most popular resolutions we make, but in life we should collect moments not things. Cutting back on expensive shopping trips, costly subscriptions, unused gym memberships or indulgent take-aways could leave you with much more time and money to explore the UK’s beautiful natural surroundings. And weekends away don’t have to cost the earth! With some clever planning you can go away and still stick to your promise of being thrifty – try going back to basics with some good old camping, take a packed lunch on days out or try carrying a refillable water bottle with you.
Spend more time with family & friends
This is one that should be on everyone’s list and what better place to make memories than on the Coast Path? With 630 miles of uninterrupted coastal walking there really is something for everyone of all levels of fitness and abilities. Also, being away from the daily distractions of modern life gives you a chance to connect with family and friends in a completely different way. So, whoever it is you’re hoping to see more this year, reach out to them and see if they fancy a walk on the Path some time.
